First Brisbane Burial Ground, Historic burial ground in Brisbane, Australia
First Brisbane Burial Ground is a historic cemetery located near Skew Street and North Quay in central Brisbane. The site contains human remains and artifacts from the colonial period preserved beneath the surface.
The cemetery was established in 1825 as Queensland's first European burial ground during the Moreton Bay penal settlement. It remained in use until 1844 when burial operations shifted to other locations.
The burial ground reflects early Brisbane's social diversity, as soldiers, convicts, and Aboriginal people were interred together in the same space. This mixing shows how people from different walks of life shared this ground.
Archaeological work continues at the site, so access may be limited depending on ongoing investigations and excavations. Visitors should check current conditions before planning a visit to see which areas are open.
In 1881 the bodies were moved from this burial ground to Brisbane General Cemetery in Toowong, transforming the original site. Archaeological traces remain underground that tell the story of this significant relocation.
