Queensland Air Museum, Aviation museum in Caloundra, Australia
The Queensland Air Museum is an aviation museum in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, displaying a large collection of aircraft and aviation artifacts across several hangars beside Caloundra Airport. The collection covers military and civilian aircraft, engines, uniforms, photographs, and technical documents.
The museum was founded in 1974, when a Canberra bomber from RAAF Base Amberley became its first exhibit. After moving several times, it settled at Caloundra Airport in 1986, where it has grown ever since.
The museum holds exhibits about the Royal Flying Doctor Service, a flying medical service that brought care to remote communities across Australia. Visitors can see original aircraft and equipment once used for these missions.
The collection is spread across several hangars, so comfortable footwear and enough time to walk through each one is a good idea. The site sits right beside an active airport, so you may spot aircraft taking off or landing during your visit.
Several aircraft in the collection were rescued from Sentosa Island in Singapore in 1989 and restored before going on display. Without that effort, those planes would likely have been lost, which makes their origins a story in themselves.
