Old Caloundra Light, Maritime lighthouse in Kings Beach, Australia
The Old Caloundra Light is a timber-framed lighthouse covered with corrugated iron panels, standing on Canberra Terrace on the Sunshine Coast. The structure rises approximately 12 meters (40 feet) above the coastal landscape and retains the distinctive appearance of a late-1800s navigation aid.
The lighthouse was built in 1896 to guide vessels through the North West Channel into Brisbane Port. It remained in operation until 1968, marking a significant period in coastal maritime activity for the region.
The lighthouse served as a hub for the coastal community, with a room that functioned as the local post office and telegraph station until 1910. This building reflects how coastal structures once held multiple roles in connecting people beyond their primary maritime purpose.
The site can be visited through guided tours organized by Friends of Caloundra Lighthouses. It is helpful to check available tour times in advance and wear appropriate clothing for the coastal environment.
The structure was relocated to Woorim Park in 1970 before returning to its original location at Canberra Terrace in 1999. This relocation saved the building from damage and makes it a remarkable example of preserved coastal heritage today.
