Honolua, Marine conservation district in northwest Maui, Hawaii.

Honolua is a protected bay on northwest Maui with clear water extending roughly half a mile from the rocky shoreline into deeper areas. The waters contain abundant coral reefs and diverse marine formations that graduate from shallow zones near the coast to deeper sections farther out.

The bay, whose name means two harbors in Hawaiian, served as a supply station for Honolua Ranch during early settlement periods and transportation activities. This function connected the area to the broader economic development of the region during its pioneer era.

The area demonstrates the traditional Hawaiian ahupuaa system, where land divisions connected mountain regions to ocean resources in a single managed unit. Visitors can still observe how this ancient arrangement shaped the relationship between upland and coastal zones.

The bay is reached through two forest trails near mile marker 32 on Highway 30, with portable restrooms available at the second entrance. The clear water offers good conditions for exploring, though both access points require a short walk through vegetation to reach the water.

The water transforms seasonally from a premier snorkeling destination in summer months to a notable surfing location during winter swells. This shift creates two distinctly different experiences depending on when you visit.
