Mokuʻula, Archaeological site in Lahaina, United States.
Mokuʻula is an archaeological site covering about one acre, located within Maluʻulu o Lele Park in Lahaina on Maui. It holds remains of houses and ceremonial spaces that lie beneath a baseball field built in 1919.
This place was King Kamehameha III's private residence from 1837 to 1845 and functioned as the center of Hawaiian government. After that period, it lost its political importance and eventually became part of a public park.
This place served as a gathering point for Hawaiian chiefs and their families who practiced their traditions here. The site still shows evidence of how people lived and organized their community in earlier times.
This site is open to visitors but lies beneath a baseball field that is still in use, so it is important to be careful when visiting. Archaeological work happens regularly here, which means some areas may be closed off at times.
This place was once surrounded by Mokuhinia, a large spring-fed lake of about 17 acres connected to Kihawahine, a Hawaiian lizard goddess. The lake was drained in the early 1900s, and its disappearance marked the end of an important spiritual landscape.
