Slaughterhouse Beach, Sandy beach at Mokuleia Bay in Hawaii.
Slaughterhouse Beach is a sandy shore in Mokuleia Bay with golden sand nestled between tall cliffs. A steep descent of roughly 100 steps leads down to the water's edge, providing access to a sheltered marine environment.
The name comes from a former slaughterhouse and tanning facility operated by Honolua Ranch that sat on the cliffs above until the 1960s. Once this operation closed, the area returned to its role as a natural coastal landscape.
The name Mokuleia comes from Hawaiian words meaning district of abundance, reflecting the marine resources that have long sustained local communities. The bay remains a place where people connect with the ocean and its natural gifts.
Parking is available near mile marker 32.2 on Honoapiilani Highway, though spaces are limited during busy times. Bring your own water and food since no facilities or services are located at or near the beach.
Winter waves attract experienced surfers seeking challenging conditions, while summer brings calm waters perfect for snorkeling near the northern point. The seasonal shifts create two very different experiences at the same location.
