Mahaiʻula Beach

Mahaiʻula Beach, White sand beach in Kekaha Kai State Park, Hawaii County, USA

Mahaiʻula Beach is a crescent of white sand stretching along clear waters where natural shade from trees and palms dots the northern end. Black lava rock formations frame the landscape, creating a distinct contrast between the sandy shore and the volcanic terrain nearby.

This location was historically a Hawaiian coastal settlement area that later became protected to preserve its natural shoreline character. The park establishment reflected efforts to maintain the original coastal environment rather than develop it commercially.

The beach holds meaning for locals who continue fishing and spending time along the water in ways connected to Hawaiian coastal life. It remains a gathering place where visitors can observe how people naturally interact with the ocean and shoreline.

Reaching the beach involves driving an unpaved road of about 1.5 miles between highway markers 90 and 91 on Highway 19, with parking near the shoreline. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes, as the surrounding lava rock can be rough underfoot.

Wild goats regularly roam the black lava fields surrounding this beach, adapted to survive on the harsh volcanic terrain. Their presence adds an unexpected element to the coastal setting, showing how animals thrive in this otherwise barren landscape.
