Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area

Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is a state beach on the western coast of Hawaii Island with about half a mile of sandy shoreline and clear water. The area is bordered by dark lava rock formations on both sides that frame the shoreline naturally.

Native Hawaiians inhabited this coastline during the pre-contact period, using it as a fishing and settlement site. The natural resources of the area supported multiple communities spread across the adjacent coast.

Winter swells generated by distant ocean storms transform swimming conditions, attracting surfers to the normally calm waters. This seasonal shift from gentle swimming spot to active wave zone occurs multiple times yearly.
