In the 1600s, the beach became a battlefield where Kualoakuana's forces fought against Kamalalawalu of Maui, leading to Kualoakuana's capture and death.

Visitors must obtain access through Mauna Kea Beach Resort's gate, with only 40 public parking spaces available and a parking fee of 21 dollars.
Every evening, floodlights from Mauna Kea Beach Hotel attract plankton, drawing manta rays that swimmers and observers can watch from Manta Ray Point.
