Pauahi, Volcanic crater in Hawaii County, US
Pauahi Crater extends 1,600 feet in length and reaches a depth of 360 feet along the Chain of Craters Road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The crater underwent three significant eruptions during the 1970s, with events occurring in May 1973, November 1973, and November 1979, each modifying its structure.
The name translates to 'destroyed by fire' in Hawaiian, and visitors can observe traditional offerings wrapped in ti leaves placed near the crater edges.
The crater stands at an elevation of 2,946 feet and can be accessed via a designated parking area located approximately 3 miles from the main road.
During the November 1973 eruption, the crater displayed an unusual phenomenon when molten lava formed a spinning whirlpool on its floor.
