Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, Remote archipelago in Honolulu County, United States.

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago in Honolulu County stretching 1,200 nautical miles across the Pacific, made up of small islands, atolls and coral reefs. Most landmasses rise just a few meters above sea level, surrounded by shallow lagoons and open waters.

The islands formed seven to thirty million years ago through eruptions on the ocean floor, with Kure Atoll as the oldest formation in the chain. In the 19th century, European and American companies briefly established guano mining operations and small settlements on some islands.

The islands carry Hawaiian names that trace back to old legends and deities, though no one lives there anymore. On Nihoa and Mokumanamana, visitors can still see the remains of stone platforms and terraces built by early arrivals.

Visiting the islands requires a special permit since they are part of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument and under strict protection. Most travelers can only experience the waters through approved research or educational expeditions.

Kure Atoll sits at 28 degrees north latitude, marking the northernmost coral atoll formation in the world. The waters around French Frigate Shoals host one of the largest populations of tiger sharks in the Pacific.
