United States Post Office–Long Beach Main
The United States Post Office - Long Beach Main is a seven-story Art Deco building dominated by a central tower and defined by geometric forms and clean lines. The exterior features stone blocks with decorative terracotta accents, while the interior uses marble walls, glass, and terrazzo flooring.
The building was designed and constructed between 1932 and 1934 by Louis A. Simon, shortly before the 1933 earthquake struck. Recovery was swift, with construction resuming quickly after the quake, and the post office opened in September 1934 to significant public celebration.
The building serves as the working heart of postal services for Long Beach residents and businesses. Its bold geometric design and clean lines represent the optimistic spirit of the 1930s, visible in every detail from the entrance stairs to the decorative terracotta elements that frame the facade.
The post office is located in downtown Long Beach on the Boulevard and easy to spot from street level. The tall tower and three large entrance doors make it simple to identify and navigate as you approach the building.
The building was under construction during the 1933 earthquake and withstood the quake with minimal damage. Its structural design of concrete columns and beams proved resilient during this natural disaster.
