Aquarium of the Pacific, Public aquarium in Long Beach, United States.
The Aquarium of the Pacific occupies 5 acres (2 hectares) along Rainbow Harbor and houses 11,000 animals from 500 species in tanks and themed zones representing different coastal regions. The facility divides into three major sections recreating Southern California ocean waters, tropical environments, and northern Pacific shores.
This facility opened its doors on June 20, 1998, and quickly grew into a center for marine research in Southern California. Over the years, additional sections were added, including areas focused on endangered species and programs dedicated to coastal water protection.
Families from Long Beach regularly bring children here to watch daily animal feedings and join hands-on learning sessions about ocean life. Volunteers stand at several stations explaining how Pacific marine environments shift with the seasons and what role the ocean plays in local life.
Entry happens in timed slots, especially on weekends and holidays when advance booking is recommended. The grounds include wheelchair access and several rest areas for families with young children.
The main tank holds 350,000 gallons (1.3 million liters) of water and houses several large fish species viewable from multiple levels. Shark Lagoon and the June Keyes Penguin Habitat form separate worlds with species adapted to cold southern waters.
