Gerald Desmond Bridge, Road bridge at Terminal Island, US
The bridge spans 5,200 feet across the water, connecting Terminal Island to Long Beach with its double arch construction and five traffic lanes.
Opened in 1968, this structure replaced a temporary World War II pontoon bridge that served the area for 24 years beyond its planned six-month lifespan.
The bridge bears the name of Gerald Desmond, a Long Beach city attorney who secured essential tideland oil funds for the construction project.
The bridge functions as a critical transportation link for the Port of Long Beach, supporting the movement of cargo containers and commercial vehicles.
Before its demolition in 2023, the bridge appeared in the 1968 film Head, featuring the rock group The Monkees.
