Pepperdine University, Private university in Malibu, United States
Pepperdine University is a private institution in Malibu that spreads across 335 hectares of land overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway. The expansive campus connects academic buildings, residence halls, sports facilities, and open spaces arranged in terraces along the slopes above the coast, surrounded by palm trees and Mediterranean vegetation.
George Pepperdine founded the institution during the Great Depression in 1937 as a college in South Los Angeles. The school relocated its main campus decades later to Malibu, where it began operations in 1972 and evolved into a university with multiple schools.
The campus displays Christian symbols and artworks in many places, making the religious heritage of the university visible to those who walk through it. Students and visitors regularly attend worship services and community gatherings that shape the spiritual life of the community and create an active atmosphere beyond the classrooms.
The campus is open to visitors who can explore the grounds on foot, while parking areas are located near the entrance. The five schools occupy different buildings across the site, with Seaver College, the law school, the business school, the graduate education and psychology school, and the public policy school each in their own sections.
The Phillips Theme Tower, reaching 125 feet (38 meters) in height, stands unlit since 1980 because ongoing discussions with Malibu residents have never reached an agreement. The tower remains visible as a landmark, but its originally planned nighttime illumination has never been turned back on.
