Holmby Hills, Residential district in Westwood, Los Angeles, US
Holmby Hills is a residential district on the westside of Los Angeles, between Beverly Hills and Bel Air. The streets curve gently through hilly terrain, lined with mature trees and large properties that feature lawns and gardens.
Arthur Letts acquired around four hundred hectares of former ranch land in the early nineteen twenties and named the area after his birthplace in England. The first plots sold from the late twenties onward, preserving the original plan of large parcels.
The district follows the original design rules set in the early nineteen twenties, with wide sidewalks and tree-lined streets. Many properties sit behind tall hedges or stone walls that shield daily life from street view.
The district lies north of Sunset Boulevard and is best reached by car, as the streets see little foot traffic. Most routes pass through quiet, low-traffic side roads that allow for daytime walks.
The original English-style street lamps from the nineteen twenties still stand on many roads. Some properties stretch over more than one and a half hectares (around four acres), among the largest residential plots in Los Angeles.
