Los Angeles World Airports, department managing airports in Los Angeles, California
Los Angeles World Airports is the government agency that operates the major airports serving Los Angeles. It manages two active airports: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Van Nuys Airport for general aviation, along with property near Palmdale Regional Airport.
The organization was established in 1928 to oversee what was then a small dirt airfield. LAX evolved from a basic grass strip called Mines Field into one of the world's busiest airports and was officially designated as Los Angeles International Airport in 1949.
The organization's main office is located on the grounds of LAX in the Westchester neighborhood. Visitors can use the FlyAway bus service to travel between the airports and downtown Los Angeles.
Van Nuys Airport, one of the managed facilities, sees over 230,000 takeoffs and landings yearly and ranks among the world's busiest general aviation airports. Although a major new international airport was planned for Palmdale, the project was never developed as originally intended due to environmental concerns and local opposition.
