Grammy Museum, Music museum at L.A. Live complex, Los Angeles, US
The Grammy Museum is a four-floor music museum at the corner of Figueroa Street and Olympic Boulevard in downtown Los Angeles's L.A. Live campus. Its tan stone facade carries silver "GRAMMY MUSEUM" letters and a dark metal canopy above glass double doors; a vertical panel shows a gramophone icon and the text "GRAMMY MUSEUM AT L.A. LIVE". Exhibits begin on the fourth floor and descend through the third and second, with a 200-seat Clive Davis Theater on the first.
The museum opened in December 2008 as part of the L.A. Live entertainment district development. Its creation established a dedicated space for music education and preserving the history of recorded music.
The museum's name comes from the Grammy Awards, and bronze disks for each year's top winners — Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist — are set into the sidewalks of L.A. Live outside. Inside, outfits worn by Grammy-winning musicians such as Taylor Swift, Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse are on display, and the Clive Davis Theater and Ray Charles Terrace host live performances, screenings and talks with artists.
The museum is situated at the edge of downtown Los Angeles with easy street access from the L.A. Live complex surroundings. Visitors should plan for a few hours to explore all floors and participate in interactive activities throughout the building.
Visitors can experience music production at interactive stations that demonstrate recording, mixing, and sound engineering techniques. These hands-on demonstrations reveal the technical processes behind how music is actually made.
