Hollywood Sign, Architectural landmark on Mount Lee, Los Angeles, US.
The Hollywood Sign features nine white capital letters, each measuring 45 feet tall and spanning across 350 feet on the southern slope of Mount Lee.
Construction workers installed the sign in 1923 as a temporary real estate advertisement for Hollywoodland development, removing the last four letters in 1949.
The white letters against the California hills represent the entertainment industry, appearing in numerous films and television productions throughout the decades.
Visitors reach viewing points through designated hiking trails in Griffith Park or from the Hollywood and Highland Center observation deck.
The Trust for Public Land purchased 138 acres surrounding the sign in 2010 following a 12.5 million dollar fundraising campaign to prevent construction.
