Colonial Street, Film backlot in Universal City, United States
Colonial Street is a backlot at Universal Studios featuring residential building facades arranged along a continuous street. The structures represent different American architectural styles and serve as functional film sets for television and movie productions.
The site was modified in 1988 for the film The Burbs, resulting in the removal of one historic house structure. Over the decades, the street has been adapted repeatedly for different productions while maintaining some original buildings from earlier eras.
This backlot served as the setting for the television series Desperate Housewives from 2004 to 2012, showing how residential streets are built as film sets. The facades demonstrate how architects and designers create believable homes specifically for television production.
Access to this backlot is restricted and requires special authorization from Universal Studios management. Only authorized production personnel and accredited individuals can visit the film sets on the lot.
The Delta House building has stood at this location since 1950 and has appeared in multiple productions over the decades. It remains one of the oldest surviving structures on the Universal lot and predates the major modifications made in later years.
