Universal City, Entertainment district in San Fernando Valley, United States.
Universal City is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County that spreads across 168 hectares and consists mainly of film studios, hotel buildings, and entertainment facilities. The land is mostly owned by the film company and is used for production, administration, and visitor attractions.
Film producer Carl Laemmle founded the community in 1915 on former ranch land to build film sets and production halls. From 1964 onward, the facilities gradually opened to visitors with guided tours through the studio backlots.
The Universal Studios Hollywood theme park opened in 1964, transforming the production facility into an entertainment destination with studio tours.
The Metro B Line station connects the community with Los Angeles and sits underground near the hotel area. From there you can walk to the shopping and dining promenade and to the entrance of the theme park.
Fire Station 51 stands on private studio property and became nationally known through the television series Emergency in the seventies. Visitors often recognize the building from scenes in the show, even though it continues to operate as a regular emergency facility.
