Starlight Bowl, Open-air amphitheater in Balboa Park, San Diego, US.
Starlight Bowl is an open-air theater set inside Balboa Park, a large public park near the center of San Diego. The stage is built for full-scale productions, and the seating rows are arranged on a slope facing it, with the park's trees visible behind the stage.
The amphitheater was built in 1935 for the California Pacific International Exposition and was first known as Ford Bowl after its corporate sponsor. In the decades that followed, it opened up to a wide range of performances and became a regular part of San Diego's public life.
The name of the venue points directly to the evening shows held under an open sky, which remain the heart of what happens here. Groups from different communities use the space for their own concerts, plays, and celebrations throughout the year.
The main entrance is through Pan American Plaza, and arriving early gives you more choice of seating on the slope. Those seated toward the middle of the rows tend to hear the sound better than those at the very front, back, or sides.
When a plane from the nearby airport passes overhead during a show, the performers on stage simply pause and wait for it to go by. This informal habit has become so familiar to regular visitors that it is often greeted with applause.
