Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is a United States Marine Corps installation in San Diego County, California. It covers mountainous terrain and several miles of Pacific coastline.
The base was created in 1942 on land that had been part of Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores. It was named after Major General Joseph H. Pendleton, a Marine Corps officer.
The base maintains the I Marine Expeditionary Force, including the 1st Marine Division, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and 1st Marine Logistics Group.
The installation provides housing, medical care, and schools for military personnel and their families. Public access is heavily restricted and generally requires clearance.
A herd of about 90 American bison lives on the grounds of the base. The animals were brought from the San Diego Zoo between 1973 and 1979.
