Betty Ford Center, Residential treatment center in Rancho Mirage, United States
The Betty Ford Center is a substance dependency treatment facility in Rancho Mirage located on a campus adjacent to the Eisenhower Medical Center. The facility houses separate areas for overnight stays and day programs with capacity for up to 180 people at once.
The facility opened in 1982 after former First Lady Betty Ford spoke publicly about her own experiences with alcohol and medication dependency alongside Leonard Firestone and James West. The center merged with the Hazelden Foundation from Minnesota in 2014 and has since formed part of a larger treatment network across the United States.
The center acknowledges its position on the traditional lands of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, incorporating this recognition into its institutional framework.
The facility sits about 10 miles from Palm Springs Airport and works with multiple insurance providers. Visitors can inquire about treatment options and admission requirements directly through the administrative offices.
The name Betty Ford Center continues to be used even though the facility has been part of the larger Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation since 2014. The methods from the original programs remain largely intact despite the organizational changes.
