Chinese Cultural Center, Phoenix, Cultural center in Phoenix, US.
The Chinese Cultural Center in Phoenix, Arizona, is a large complex along a main road that brings together gardens, office buildings, shops, and restaurants in one place. It houses an Asian supermarket, several restaurants serving regional Chinese cuisines, and specialty stores with traditional goods.
The center was developed by a Chinese state enterprise and opened in 1998 with the aim of promoting Chinese culture and trade in the Phoenix area. It was among the first projects of this scale to bring Chinese traditions so openly to the American Southwest.
The gardens were designed by craftsmen from China and feature pavilions, koi ponds, and stone paths that recall classical Chinese park design. Walking through the grounds, visitors can see how traditional eastern design sits within the dry landscape of Arizona.
The grounds are easy to explore on foot, with gardens, shops, and restaurants close to each other, so you can move at your own pace and focus on what interests you most. A visit works well around mealtime, since the restaurants are a central part of the experience.
One of the most striking features of the site is a gate modeled after a historic city gate from China, built by craftsmen who traveled specifically for that purpose. This kind of faithful reproduction is very rare to find anywhere in the United States.
