Blythe, Desert city in Riverside County, California
Blythe is a city in Riverside County at the California-Arizona border that extends along the Colorado River. The built area sits within agricultural lands in the Palo Verde Valley at roughly 270 feet (80 meters) elevation.
Settlement began after 1877 when Thomas Henry Blythe secured water rights along the Colorado River. The community later developed into a city once irrigation systems enabled farming in the desert region.
The town takes its name from a San Francisco investor who acquired water rights along the Colorado River here. Local residents use several public recreation areas that see increased activity during winter months.
Interstate 10 runs through the town and connects it to larger metropolitan areas in California and Arizona. Bus stops and a regional airfield offer additional connections for travelers.
Fields in the Palo Verde Valley receive year-round irrigation from the Colorado River. This watering allows cultivation of various crops despite the surrounding desert environment.
