Hueco Tanks State Historic Site, Historic site and rock climbing destination in El Paso County, Texas.
Hueco Tanks State Historic Site is a protected area featuring three syenite mountains scattered across about 860 acres of desert landscape in El Paso County. The site's defining characteristic is its natural rock basins, known as huecos, that trap and hold rainwater in this arid environment.
People have inhabited this location for over 10,000 years, with rock art dating back to approximately 6000 BC. The site served as an important destination for various Native American cultures seeking water and shelter in the mountain regions.
The rock surfaces display hundreds of pictographs created by the Jornada Mogollon people as expressions of their spiritual beliefs. These artistic markings reveal how communities used this site to convey meaning and connection to the land.
Access to North Mountain requires advance permits that should be arranged before your visit. All visitors must complete an orientation video before exploring the designated areas.
The natural rock formations are popular with climbing enthusiasts, offering challenges suited to all skill levels from beginners to experienced climbers. This blend of historical significance and outdoor recreation draws visitors with different interests.
