Carazo Department, Administrative department in southwestern Nicaragua
The Carazo Department extends across 1,081 square kilometers of tropical plains that slope towards the Pacific Ocean, bordered by Managua and Granada departments.
Indigenous Chorotega and Nahua populations established settlements in the Carazo region, with the name deriving from the Nahua chiefdom of Xinotepet.
The department's agricultural heritage centers on coffee cultivation, with local farmers maintaining traditional growing methods in the volcanic soil conditions.
Eight municipalities form the department, including the capital Jinotepe, where administrative offices and main commercial services are concentrated.
The Río Escalante-Chacocente Wildlife Reserve protects 4,645 hectares of dry tropical forest and beaches where sea turtles nest from July to December.
