Santo Domingo Monastery, church building in Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala
Hotel Casa Santo Domingo is a hotel in the colonial city center of Antigua Guatemala, built within the surviving remains of a 17th-century Dominican convent. Rooms and common areas are arranged around several open courtyards and exposed ruins, with six museum spaces, two art galleries, dining areas, and a spa with a heated outdoor pool on the grounds.
The Convent of Santo Domingo was founded in the 17th century and grew into one of the largest religious complexes in Central America before the 1773 earthquake brought most of it to the ground. Excavation and restoration work that began in 1989 uncovered the buried remains and led to the conversion of the site into a hotel.
The old convent walls and exposed ruins are woven into the daily experience of staying here, with guests walking through open courtyards past stone columns and fragments of frescoes. This way of living alongside a historic structure is something visitors can see and touch, not just read about.
The hotel is on one of Antigua's main streets, close to the city center, so most of the town's sights are within easy walking distance. Booking ahead is a good idea, as room types vary considerably depending on their location within the complex, and some areas like the spa require separate access.
Some rooms open directly onto the spa area and are decorated with tiles painted by local artists, each room carrying a different design. These spaces were carved out of the old convent walls, making them physically and visually distinct from the rest of the property.
