San Miguel Department, Administrative department in eastern El Salvador

San Miguel Department spans over 2,077 square kilometers of territory, containing mountains, agricultural lands, and coastal areas along the Pacific Ocean.

The department was officially established on June 12, 1824, as one of the original four departments during El Salvador's first constitutional organization.

The department celebrates numerous festivals throughout its municipalities, with the November carnival in San Miguel city drawing thousands of visitors.

The region maintains strong agricultural production of basic grains, sugar cane, and fruits, while also supporting extensive livestock farming operations.

Ciudad Barrios within San Miguel Department marks the birthplace of Archbishop Oscar Romero, who became an important figure in El Salvador's history.
