Estadio Juan Francisco Barraza, Football stadium in San Miguel, El Salvador
Estadio Juan Francisco Barraza is a football stadium in the center of San Miguel, El Salvador, built around a natural grass pitch with open concrete stands on all sides. It holds around 10,000 spectators and follows the straightforward layout common to sports venues across Central America.
The stadium was built in 1956 and opened in 1959 with a match between Olimpia and Águila. In 1982 it was renamed to honor Juan Francisco 'Cariota' Barraza, a Salvadoran footballer who was active in the 1950s.
The ground is home to C.D. Águila and C.D. Dragón, two of the most followed football clubs in El Salvador. On match days, supporters from San Miguel and the surrounding region fill the open stands and create a loud, festive mood.
The stadium sits in central San Miguel and is easy to reach by car or taxi from most parts of the city. On match days it helps to arrive early, as the streets nearby tend to get busy before kickoff.
The word 'Cariota' in the full name was Barraza's nickname, taken from a type of palm tree, which is an unusual origin for a stadium name. The renovations carried out between 2016 and 2017 reinforced the stands without changing the original shape of the building.
