Tatacoa Desert, Desert and Tentative World Heritage Site in Huila Department, Colombia.
The Tatacoa region extends across 330 square kilometers of land, featuring distinct zones of ochre-colored terrain in Cuzco and gray formations in Los Hoyos.
Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada named this area the Valley of Sorrows in 1538, while the name Tatacoa originated from the local rattlesnakes.
The astronomical observatory in the desert hosts nightly presentations about constellations and celestial bodies, attracting visitors from across South America.
Travelers reach the desert through the town of Villavieja, located 38 kilometers from Neiva, with local guides offering tours through the eroded canyons.
The desert contains deep labyrinthine gullies formed in clay surfaces, reaching depths of 20 meters and creating natural maze-like structures.
