The Área Metropolitana de Neiva is a metropolitan region in Huila Department that encompasses eight municipalities along the Magdalena River. Besides Neiva as the main center, Rivera, Palermo, Tello, Campoalegre, Baraya, Aipe, and Villavieja make up this connected territory spread across the river landscape.
The area was founded in the mid-16th century and grew into the main administrative center for Huila Department. The Magdalena River played a key role in connecting the municipalities and helped the region become economically important.
