Operation Sodoma, Military operation in La Macarena, Meta Region, Colombia
Operation Sodoma was a military action carried out by Colombian armed forces and national police in the dense forests of the Meta region, targeting FARC rebel positions. The operation focused on mountainous terrain in La Macarena where known rebel camps were located.
The operation took place on September 22-23, 2010, and resulted in the death of Jorge Briceño Suárez, known as Mono Jojoy, a principal FARC commander. This action marked a significant moment in Colombia's military campaign against the rebel organization.
The operation's name comes from the biblical city of Sodom, following a tradition where the Colombian military chose biblical references for major campaigns. This naming practice was part of how the armed forces framed their operations internally.
Military intelligence gathered over several months used advanced surveillance techniques to identify the exact locations of FARC camps in the La Macarena mountains. This preparation allowed the forces to move quickly and precisely in difficult terrain.
During the operation, twenty FARC members were neutralized, while two Colombian soldiers died and five were wounded in the confrontation. These losses reflected the intensity and danger of conducting operations in such difficult terrain.
