Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral, Villavicencio, Roman Catholic cathedral in Villavicencio, Colombia.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral is a neoclassical cathedral in central Villavicencio, Colombia, with two tall towers and ornamental columns framing its entrance. The building faces the main plaza and features a broad nave flanked by side aisles inside.
The first structure was built in 1845 and completed in 1848, but a fire in 1890 caused serious damage that required major repairs. A 1917 earthquake then triggered a full renovation campaign that substantially changed the building's layout.
The cathedral is the seat of the local archdiocese and draws people from across the city for Sunday masses and personal prayer throughout the week. Many families from Villavicencio mark important life events here, from baptisms to weddings.
The cathedral stands on the main plaza of Villavicencio and is easy to reach on foot from most of the city center. It is open daily for masses and visits, so stopping by does not require much planning ahead.
During the 1944 renovation, the interior was widened by about 2 meters on each side while the original facade was kept in place. This allowed the building to gain more room for worshippers without altering what people see from the plaza.
