Quipile, Administrative division in Cundinamarca, Colombia.
Quipile is an administrative division in Cundinamarca situated across mountainous terrain at approximately 2,012 meters elevation. Agricultural production dominates the landscape, with coffee, sugarcane, and banana crops throughout the territory.
The territory was originally under the control of the indigenous Panche people until Spanish colonial rule began following the Battle of Tocarema on August 20, 1538. This turning point marked the shift from indigenous to colonial administration.
The name comes from the Cariban language of the Panche people, referring to a tribal leader known for strength and influence. Local communities today connect with these indigenous roots through place names and regional customs.
The territory sits approximately 83 kilometers from Bogotá and maintains road connections with neighboring municipalities including Bituima, Vianí, Jerusalén, and Anapoima. This proximity to other population centers makes visiting and traveling through the region straightforward.
Fossils of Megatherium and Mastodon from the Pleistocene period, dating back around 460,000 years, were discovered here in 1956. These paleontological finds reveal that the region was once inhabited by giant extinct animals.
