La Vaca, Protected wetland in Kennedy, Colombia.
La Vaca is a wetland in Kennedy covering several hectares at an elevation of about 2,500 meters. The area contains open water, native vegetation, and walking paths for visitors to observe the ecosystem.
The site was originally known as Techovita after a Muisca leader who controlled this territory before Spanish arrival. In recent decades it became a dumping ground before restoration efforts began to reclaim the land.
The wetland represents a space where local people have worked together to restore nature in an urban setting. Community members and volunteers continue to care for the area through environmental activities and educational programs.
Wear sturdy footwear when visiting since the ground around the wetland can be wet and muddy. Mornings and late afternoons offer better conditions for walking and observing wildlife without intense sun exposure.
The site was transformed from an open dumping ground into a functioning natural space, showing how degraded land can be restored. This shift also made the location safer and allowed plants and animals to return.
