Cogua, Municipal center in Cundinamarca, Colombia
Cogua is a municipality in the northern mountains of Cundinamarca at approximately 2,600 meters elevation. The terrain is mountainous and covers an area of roughly 113 square kilometers with meadows and forest.
The municipality was founded in 1604 by Lorenzo de Terrones, giving it formal recognition as a Colombian settlement. This founding marked the beginning of Spanish settlement in this mountain region.
The name Cogua comes from the Muisca language, spoken by people who lived here long before the Spanish arrived. Locals maintain a connection to this heritage and the natural surroundings that shaped their ancestors' lives.
The municipality is connected to neighboring areas through a road network with regular buses to Bogotá, roughly 50 kilometers to the south. Visitors should be prepared for cool temperatures and mountainous terrain due to the high elevation.
Within the municipality sits the Neusa Reservoir, an important water source for the region. The reservoir also offers opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and nature observation in the surrounding mountains.
