Norte de Santander Department
Norte de Santander Department, Administrative department in northeastern Colombia
Norte de Santander spans across 21,648 square kilometers of diverse terrain, including mountains, plains, and valleys along the Venezuelan border.
The department was established in 1910 during Colombia's administrative reorganization, named after Francisco de Paula Santander, a prominent military leader.
The region preserves traditions from indigenous Barí and Chitatero peoples through local festivals, crafts, music, and traditional agricultural practices.
The department connects to Venezuela through multiple border crossings near Cúcuta, facilitating international trade and transportation between both countries.
The Páramo de Santurbán wetlands within the department provide water resources to over two million people and support numerous endemic plant species.
