Province de Santander, Administrative department in eastern Colombia.
Provincia de Santander is an administrative department in the eastern Colombian Andes, stretching across valleys, mountains, and rivers. Bucaramanga serves as the provincial capital, anchoring a network of 87 municipalities spread throughout the region.
The territory was founded in 1795 and named after Francisco de Paula Santander, a leader of the independence movement. It formed from the earlier provinces of Socorro and Pamplona, which merged at that time.
The region shows traces of German and Italian immigrants from the 19th century, visible in local traditions, music, and food. These influences shape how people here celebrate and live together today.
Visitors can reach the province through Bucaramanga's airport, which receives regular flights from major Colombian cities throughout the year. Travel conditions vary depending on elevation, as lowland and mountainous areas experience different weather patterns.
The territory contains geographically distinct zones, each with its own economic focus ranging from coffee farming to oil extraction in Barrancabermeja. This specialization makes each area interesting for different types of visitors.
