Curú Wildlife Refuge

Curú Wildlife Refuge is a protected area on the southeastern Nicoya Peninsula featuring deciduous forests, mangroves, and beaches with diverse plant and animal life. Multiple marked trails wind through the terrain, each offering different views of the local ecosystems and their inhabitants.

Created in 1983, the refuge transformed former farmland and logging areas into a protected conservation zone. It is now managed by Área de Conservación Tempisque to safeguard the region's natural habitats.

Guided tours here connect visitors with local wildlife and conservation efforts through hands-on observation and education. The refuge demonstrates how communities engage with nature protection in their daily work.

The refuge is easiest to explore during drier months when trails are more accessible and wildlife is more active. Bring sturdy footwear, water, and insect repellent, and plan visits for early morning to increase your chances of seeing animals.
