Church of Saint Blaise of Nicoya, Colonial church in Nicoya, Costa Rica.
The Church of Saint Blaise is a colonial religious building in central Nicoya with a white facade, central nave, and bell tower. The structure follows Spanish architectural design from the 1600s and occupies a raised plaza in the town center.
The building was constructed in 1644 as one of the oldest structures with Spanish roots in the region. An earthquake in 1831 caused severe damage, and extensive restoration work afterward made it the last remaining colonial church in Costa Rica.
The building serves as the community gathering place and has shaped the plaza in front of it for generations. Local residents continue to use the space for religious celebrations and holidays that mark the town's traditions.
Visits are possible during daylight hours and the building is within walking distance from most areas of Nicoya. Dress respectfully and be aware that services sometimes take place, which may limit access to certain areas.
Despite its centuries of existence, the structure has undergone significant changes through various restoration efforts over time. Recent renovation work aimed to bring it closer to its original appearance by using materials and techniques that honor historical methods.
