Provincia de Barquisimeto, Historical province in central-western Venezuela
The Province of Barquisimeto was a historical administrative region in central-western Venezuela that included several major settlements such as Barquisimeto, Quibor, Tocuyo, and Carora. The territory was divided into cantons and formed an organized administrative system for the local population.
The province was founded on March 29, 1832 following separation from Carabobo Province and underwent several administrative changes throughout its existence. It became part of Lara State in 1891, losing its status as an independent administrative division.
The province maintained strong Catholic traditions throughout its existence, with religious practices deeply embedded in the social structure of its communities.
Today, visitors are primarily interested in the historical sites and settlements that once formed part of this province. Exploring these areas offers insight into the colonial and early national history of the region.
The territory was elevated to the Sovereign State of Barquisimeto in 1864, an attempt to achieve greater political autonomy. This restructuring did not result in lasting independence, however, as the region was later divided into other administrative units.
