The Cathedral Basilica features a baroque-colonial Churrigueresque altarpiece and stained glass windows produced by Munich craftsman X. F. Zettler.
The initial cathedral construction began in 1710, experienced damage from an earthquake in 1782, and underwent reconstruction from 1788 to 1807.
The cathedral maintains a connection to the Virgin of Coromoto apparitions of 1651 and 1652, which led to indigenous conversions in the region.

Pope Pius XII elevated the cathedral to Minor Basilica status in 1949 and declared the Virgin of Coromoto as Venezuela's patron saint in 1944.
