Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Salud, Pátzcuaro

The basilica features a central barrel-vaulted nave with a pentagonal chapel and multiple side chapels built in New Spanish Baroque style.

Construction began in 1540 under Bishop Vasco de Quiroga on a former Purépecha pyramid site and served as a cathedral until 1580.

The venerated image of Our Lady of Health, made from corn paste by Purépecha artisans in the 16th century, stands behind the main altar.

The basilica stands at Plaza de la Basílica on Benigno Serrato Street, where vendors sell traditional remedies and religious items outside.

Devotees crawl on their knees through the plaza and nave, leaving tin votives representing body parts for which they seek healing.
