President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río established the national park in 1941 to safeguard the natural resources and ecosystems of the region.
The name Camécuaro originates from Purépecha language, translating to 'place where one falls into a deep pond' according to historical records.
Located 14 kilometers from Zamora de Hidalgo, 186 kilometers from Guadalajara, and 136 kilometers from Morelia, the park offers hiking and birdwatching opportunities.
The lake reaches a maximum depth of 6 meters and contains multiple natural springs that maintain constant water levels throughout the year.
