2015 Tanhuato–Ecuandureo shootout, Police confrontation site in Tanhuato de Guerrero, Mexico.
The 2015 Tanhuato-Ecuandureo shootout was an armed confrontation that took place on a rural property in the western Mexican state of Michoacán. The site consists of farmland and basic structures near the town of Tanhuato de Guerrero, close to the border with the state of Jalisco.
In May 2015, Mexican federal police carried out an operation at this property that ended with 43 people dead. The events triggered an investigation after human rights organizations raised questions about whether some of those killed had been executed outside of combat.
The area around Tanhuato de Guerrero is farming country, and the site sits amid fields that locals pass through in their daily lives. The events of 2015 left a mark on this community that outsiders can sense in the quietness of the place and the absence of any public commemoration.
The site is in a remote rural area of Michoacán and is not set up to receive visitors, with no public facilities or marked access. Anyone heading to the area should be aware that it is a sensitive location and that road conditions in this part of Mexico can be difficult.
A subsequent review by Mexico's national human rights commission found evidence suggesting that several of those killed may have been shot after being disarmed. This finding made the case one of the most closely watched in recent Mexican law enforcement history.
