Zoológico Benito Juárez, Municipal zoo in Morelia, Mexico.
Zoológico Benito Juárez is a municipal zoo in Morelia, Michoacán. The grounds cover approximately 25 hectares (62 acres) and house more than two thousand animals from every continent.
The zoo opened in September 1970 under Governor Carlos Gálvez Betancourt. The initiative came from Jesús Guzmán Villicaña, who wanted to create a modern concept for the region.
The park carries the name of the reformer who fought for social justice in the 19th century. Families gather on weekends under the shady trees to see the animals and enjoy the maintained pathways.
The grounds lie south of the city along Calzada Juárez, and public buses stop at the Zoológico station. The park offers enough shade for a visit on warm days and spreads across several zones with paths for different animal areas.
The facility works with special air purification systems to keep the environment healthy for animals and visitors. Breeding programs have successfully increased several antelope populations in recent years.
