The statue represents Christopher Columbus in a standing position, created by sculptor Manuel Vilar i Roca with a base designed by Juan Agea.
The monument, completed in 1892, marks the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival to America, with President Porfirio Diaz leading the inauguration ceremony.
The creation of this monument stems from a proposal by José Bernardo Couto, president of the Academy of San Carlos, to honor significant historical figures.
The monument stands at the intersection of Esq Buenavista and Heroes Ferrocarrileros streets, in the Cuauhtémoc district of Mexico City.
The original plaster model of the statue, completed in 1858, remains preserved at the Museum of Art of Mexico.
