El Pensil Mexicano

El Pensil Mexicano is a baroque garden with stone walls, a wooden entrance gate bearing carved lettering, and a bell tower rising among trees and old structures. The layout combines functional spaces with architectural details characteristic of colonial New Spain.

The property was established in 1765 when Manuel Marcos de Ibarra acquired the land and built a country estate with its garden using indigenous labor. This period marked the height of colonial influence in the region when wealthy property owners commissioned such estates.

This place served as a gathering space for the city's wealthy residents, where music performances and social events brought people together in an elegant setting. The layout still shows how such occasions would have unfolded throughout the grounds.

The garden is accessible via Metro San Joaquín station and is located near Lago Chiem 84 in the Ahuehuetes Anáhuac neighborhood. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and paths wind between old structures and vegetation.

The garden contains folly structures, decorative elements built without practical purpose and existing purely for aesthetic appeal. This was a fashionable trend in European gardens that wealthy colonial landowners replicated in this remote setting.
